Project Attributes:

Project Overview

I partnered with the Associate Vice Chancellor and Chief Diversity Chancellor of the DEI Office to redesign an existing Search Committee training for the Human Resources department.

The Original Training:

The original training consisted primarily of recorded slide presentations and quizzes. The presentations were text-heavy, offered limited learner interaction, and did not include clearly defined learning objectives. There were also two separate Canvas courses—one for faculty and one for staff.

The New Training:

I redesigned the learning experience by combining the two audiences into a single Canvas course and transforming the existing presentation-based content into interactive Articulate Storyline lessons. The redesigned course incorporated learning objectives, visual design, interactive self-checks, immediate feedback, transcripts, and Canvas-based assessments.

The Challenge

The existing Search Committee training provided the necessary content, but its design offered limited opportunities for active learning.

The original experience:

  • Used recorded PowerPoint presentations as the primary instructional format

  • Relied heavily on text-based slides

  • Included videos and quizzes but little interaction within the lessons

  • Had no clearly stated learning objectives

  • Was divided into separate faculty and staff Canvas courses

  • Did not provide an engaging or visually cohesive learning experience

The goal was not simply to update the visual appearance of the training. The larger opportunity was to rethink how learners would interact with the content while maintaining HR's ability to deliver and track the training through Canvas.

My Role

As the Instructional Designer, I worked collaboratively with the SME to determine how the existing content could be transformed into a more effective online learning experience.

My responsibilities included:

  • Evaluating the existing training and identifying opportunities for improvement

  • Recommending a consolidated Canvas course for faculty and staff

  • Advising on the instructional and technology approach

  • Prototyping the learning experience in both Articulate Rise and Storyline

  • Presenting prototypes to the SME and stakeholder and incorporating feedback

  • Transforming SME-provided presentation content into interactive lessons

  • Reorganizing text and improving visual hierarchy

  • Designing learner interactions and knowledge checks

  • Incorporating transcripts into the Storyline lessons

  • Developing the Storyline lessons

  • Structuring the final Canvas course

  • Integrating lesson assessments into Canvas

The SME remained responsible for developing the subject-matter content, while I focused on instructional strategy, learning experience design, visual communication, interaction design, and eLearning development.

Design Process

01 - Evaluating the Existing Experience

I first considered how the existing training was being delivered and where the learner experience could be improved.

The primary instructional format was recorded PowerPoint presentations followed by quizzes. Because learners were primarily watching presentations rather than interacting with the content, I saw an opportunity to introduce more active engagement within the lessons themselves.

I also recognized that faculty and staff were receiving essentially the same training through separate Canvas courses. Consolidating the audiences into a single course provided an opportunity to create one consistent learning experience and it was easier for HR to track learners' progress.

02 - Establishing the Learning Structure

The redesigned training was organized as a single Canvas course rather than maintaining separate faculty and staff versions.

The final course consisted of five modules:

Module 1 — Welcome

  • Chancellor/leadership greeting video

  • Course learning objectives

Module 2 — Lesson 1

  • Lesson overview

  • Learning objectives

  • Interactive Storyline lesson

  • Canvas quiz

Module 3 — Lesson 2

  • Lesson overview

  • Learning objectives

  • Interactive Storyline lesson

  • Canvas quiz

Module 4 — Lesson 3

  • Lesson overview

  • Learning objectives

  • Interactive Storyline lesson

  • Canvas quiz

Module 5 — Final

  • Final Knowledge Check

  • Confidentiality Form Submission

This structure provided a consistent navigation pattern throughout the training and allowed HR to continue using Canvas to manage and track learner progress.

03 - Prototyping

Before developing all of the lessons, I created two prototypes of the same type of learning experience. One prototype was developed in Articulate Rise, while the other was developed in Articulate Storyline.

I presented both prototypes to the SME so we could evaluate the experience before committing to the development approach.

We ultimately selected Storyline because its greater flexibility allowed me to create the interactions and customized visual presentation needed for the training.

04 - Review & Refine

Throughout the project, I submitted materials for SME and stakeholder review, participated in Zoom meetings to address questions and clarify requirements, and incorporated feedback into subsequent versions.

The final materials were reviewed and refined before project completion.

Outcome

The redesign transformed the Search Committee training from a primarily passive, presentation-based experience into a more structured and interactive online learning experience.

The redesigned training:

  • Consolidated separate faculty and staff courses into one Canvas course

  • Introduced learning objectives at the course and lesson levels

  • Replaced passive slide-recording lessons with interactive Storyline lessons

  • Added visual design and improved content organization

  • Introduced interactive self-checks with immediate feedback

  • Included transcript-style notes to support learners

  • Maintained Canvas as the delivery and tracking environment

  • Provided HR with a consistent course structure for the training

The project also established a repeatable approach for converting SME-developed presentation content into a more engaging digital learning experience.
